Garden Recipe: Tropical Sorrel Smoothie

Sorrel is among the first things we harvest in our Backyard Harvest Project. This green has a surprising tart flavour, which comes from the same chemical compound you’ll find in rhubarb (oxalic acid). We use naturally sweeter ingredients in this smoothie to balance the tart sorrel. Serves 2.

Ingredients:

1 frozen banana (medium - large)
1 cup tropical frozen fruit
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 1/2 cups almond milk
1/2 cup pineapple juice
A handful of sorrel leaves

Instructions:

Pretty simple stuff; blend all of your ingredients together and enjoy.

Good to know: high quantities of oxalic acid can have negative health effects; I wouldn’t do a sorrel smoothie diet!
